Sensitive Skin

Characteristics of a sensitive skin

  • Tendency towards blushing and skin flushing.

  • Very dry skin.

  • Redness.

  • Tendency towards skin reactions such as skin erosion, pustules and skin bumps.

  • Sensitivity towards certain household / skincare ingredients which causes inflammation, burning, discomfort and stinging.

 

Causes of a sensitive skin

  • Genetics.

  • Lifestyle  - not enough water intake, poor diet, poor personal hygiene, stress and not enough sleep.
  • Overuse of harsh ingredients on the skin.
  • Over exposure to elements like sun, cold and wind.
  • Damaged lipid, or very weak lipid barrier.
  • Skin injuries.
  • Overly dry and dehydrated skin.

Prevention

  • Use skin care products containing soothing and calming ingredients like Camomile and Calendula Extracts.

  • Use products that will strengthen the lipid barrier, like ceramides and phytosterols.

  • Avoid any product containing AHA's, BHA's, and Retinoids.

  • Avoid any product containing SLES or SLS.

  • Avoid products with fragrances and alcohol.

  • Use a simple and gentle daily skin care regime.

  • Avoid over exposure to elements like sun, cold & wind.

  • Drink enough water, get enough sleep and follow a balance diet.

Ingredients to look out for

Squalane, Avocado, Jojoba, Soy Bean, Hemp Seed, Olive and Safflower carrier oils, Shea, Cocoa and Mango butter, Beeswax, Glycerine, Hyaluronic acid, Sodium Lactate, Panthenol, Pomegrante and Green Tea extracts, Allantoin.

Skin Regime

  • Keep skin clean with a very mild facial wash suitable for sensitive skin and one that does not contain any SLES or SLS.  Another option would be to use a cleansing balm or cleansing oil, instead of a facial wash.

  • Spray on a hydrosol toner containing Camomile, Panthenol and/or hyaluronic acid, which will lock in moisture to the skin.

  • Apply serums to the face according to the problem areas.  Eye serum around the eyes, and maybe a hydrating serum to the drier areas of the face and which serum may contain waxes, oils, butters and hyaluronic acid.

  • Always apply a daily moisturizer for dry skin that contains SPF factor for use during the day.

  • Use a deep moisturizing cream for during the night or a night-time mask with which one can sleep.

  • Do not use any exfoliating creams on sensitive skin.  Also do not use chemical exfoliating creams on sensitive skin.

  • Use a deep moisturizing mask at least twice a week.

  • Avoid hot showers and outside elements like extreme cold and winds.  Use a humidifier when heaters are on in your vicinity.  

  • Drink enough water, follow a balanced diet, and get enough sleep.
