Oily & Problem Skin

Characteristics of an oily/problem skin

  • Shiny & oily skin surface.

  • Acne blemishes & scars.

  • Dark and enlarged pores.

  • Pimples and white/black heads.

Causes of an oily/problem skin

  • Hot climates / lots of exercise which increases perspiration and which in turns creates bad bacteria on the skin surface.

  • The overuse of makeup for example foundation, and especially true when going to sleep without cleansing the face properly.

  • Poor diet.

  • Lack of exfoliation to get rid of all the old dead skin cells that clogs the pores.

  • Overproduction of sebum due to hormonal changes in the body.

  • Lack of moisture.  There is this misconception that because my body overproduce oil, my oily skin doesn't need any more moisture.  This is a big mistake that most people make.  Not giving any moisture to an oily skin, forces the body to produce even more oil to make up for the lack of moisture.

Prevention

  • I always say that keeping an oily skin clean is 90% of the problem solved.  Also remember that dirty hair also causes pimples, so it is important that you keep your hair clean as well.  This is the reason why so many people have acne under their fringes.

  • Remember to moisturize the skin with a suitable moisturizer for oily skin.

  • Exfoliate at least twice a week, and then follow up directly with a mask for oily skin.

  • You can also invest in a moisturizer which contain chemical exfoliating ingredients such as lactic, salicylic or glycolic acid.

  • Going for regular acid peels at a good salon will not only minimize the size of the pores, but it will also fade scars and blemishes.  Regular acid peels are also extremely good for the 'moon surface' skin, as it strips away all the old layers of the skin which contains the acne scarring.

Ingredients to look out for

Grapeseed, Evening Primrose and Rosehip carrier oil, Frankincense, Lavender, Chamomile, Tea Tree, Bergamot, Rosemary and Geranium essential oils, Green Tea, Hibiscus, and Liquorice extracts, Bulbine Frutescens, Ginko Biloba, Aloe Vera juice, Niacinamide, Hyaluronic acid, Lactic, Glycolic and Salicylic acid, and physical exfoliating particles like ground apricot shells.

Skin Regime

  • Keep hair and skin clean. Remember this is 90% of the problem solved.  If you are a student, wash your face when you get home, and use an allice band to keep away the hair from your face for as long as possible. You must use a facial wash suitable for oily skin.

  • Apply a toner suitable for oily skin.  This will clean off any other dirt or makeup, refine the pores and add extra moisture to the skin.

  • Always apply a moisturizer when you have washed your face.  During the day use a light moisturizer with a SPF factor.  During the night you can use a cream which contains chemical exfoliating ingredients like for instance glycolic acid.

  • At least twice a week you must use an exfoliating cream with physical particles to rid your skin of all the dead skin that clogs the pores and follow up with a mask suitable for oily skin.

  • If you experience very bad scars, and enlarge pores, regular acid peels done by a professional salon will do the trick.
