Dry Skin

Characteristics of dry skin

  • Flaky, scaling and dull looking skin.

  • Tightness after coming in contact with water.

  • Irritation, soreness, redness or cracked skin.

  • Dry skin crinkle when push with the finger.

Causes of dry skin

  • As we get older the skin produces less sebum which leads to dry and dehydrated skin.

  • Poor diet, and not enough water intake.

  • Ageing - as we aged the skin becomes very thin and loses moisture.  This is a normal process, but it can be accelerated due to external factors such as exposure to UV radiation.

  • Damage to the lipid layer of the skin due to harsh chemicals.  This creates gaps in the skin barrier through which water escape, and this results in a dry and dehydrated skin.

  • Overexposure to elements such as air-conditioning, heaters, wind, extreme cold and sun.

Prevention

  • Make sure that your products contain all three of the following:  Humectants (such as Hyaluronic acid and Panthenol), Emollients (such as carrier oils and butters) and Occlusives (such as Jojoba Oil).

  • Strengthen the skin barrier by carrier oils high in fatty acids like Linoleic, Alpha and Gamma Linolenic acids.

  • Stay away from Oleic acid.

  • Always use a sunscreen.

Ingredients to look out for

Shea, Mango and Cocoa butter, Jojoba, Soybean, Hemp Seed, Safflower and Sandalwood carrier oils, Glycerine, Hyaluronic acid, Panthenol, Beeswax, Urea, Linoleic acid, Hydrolysed Proteins, Squalane, Phytosterols, Ceramides, Peptides, Gingbo Biloba, Centella Asiatica, Bulbine Frutescence, Aloa Vera, Cucumber, Liquorice and Calendula Extracts.

Skin Regime

  • Use a gentle and natural facial wash with soothing ingredients, and which is suitable for dry skin.  Maybe a better option will be to use cleansing oils or cleansing balms.

  • Use a toner which contain hyaluronic acid for added moisture.  The function of a toner or spraying mist is to add water to the skin, which then get sealed in by the moisturizer or creams.

  • You can use serums on the areas which is in need of extra care.  You can use more than one serum at a time.  For instance, you can use an eye serum around the eyes, and you can use a hydrating serum for your cheeks if they are extra dry.

  • Use a good moisturizer during the day which must contain a SPF factor.

  • During the night use a night cream for dry skin.  There is hydrating masks on the market which can be used at a night cream.  As an example, please see the Collogen & Copper Peptide mask down below in the shop section.

  • Do not use any exfoliating serums or creams on a dry skin.  No physical or chemical exfoliation to be used.

  • For extra moisture you can use a hydrating mask twice a week.

  • Take enough water daily and eat a balanced diet.

  • Avoid elements such as heaters, air-conditioners, cold, wind and sun.
